The Use of Antibiotics in the Hospital in the Home Program
Dr Andrew Fuller, Infectious Diseases Physician and Head of the Hospital in the Home Program at The Alfred, presented on best practice principles for antibiotic use in HITH. He discussed indications for home-based intravenous and oral therapy, monitoring requirements, risks and complications, and strategies to maintain antimicrobial stewardship outside the hospital environment. Case examples were used to illustrate decision-making, escalation pathways, and interdisciplinary roles in managing infections in the home setting.
The presentation highlighted how structured governance, careful patient selection, and robust clinical oversight support the safe and effective delivery of antibiotic therapy in HITH programs.
